Blue Mt. Volunteer Ambulance Service

History

Blue Mountain Hospital Volunteer Ambulance formally known as "Grant County Volunteer Ambulance" has been in service from the early 1970s to today’s date. The ambulance service is primarily a Volunteer Ambulance Service that responds to over 5,500 square miles of service area. The service has 25 volunteers, 2 full time paid EMT-Intermediates, 1 full time paid Paramedic, 18 Volunteer EMT-Basics, 6 Volunteer EMT-Intermediates. We also have 7 Oregon Certified Volunteer First Responders in the county.

First Responders have to take a sixty hour class and pass a state written and practical exam to become a First Responder. On top of that they have to complete many hours of continuing education each year as well as pass practical skills verification every two years. EMT-Basics are required to take a 140 to 180 hour college course and pass both State and National written and practical tests to become an EMT-Basic. On top of that they have to complete many hours of continuing education each year as well as pass practical skills verification every two years. EMT-Intermediates are required to take a 140 to 230 hour college course and pass State written and practical exams. They also have to do many recertification hours and do skill verification tests each year. To become a Oregon Paramedic it takes about 4 years and an AAS Degree and then you have to pass the National and Oregon's written and practical exams.

The backbone of the Ambulance Service is the Volunteers which are located in every town in Grant County. Most towns in Grant County have a Quick Response Vehicle or an Oregon Licensed Ambulance as well as having EMTs. Having this type of coverage is critical in our county due to the remote areas and long response and transport times. Every ambulance and/or Quick Response Team has Automatic External Defibrillators as well as equipment and supplies to take immediate care of most illnesses and injuries.

Technology & Skills

The EMTs at Blue Mountain Hospital Volunteer Ambulance keep up with today’s ever changing technologies and strive to have the best equipment possible as well as the best possible training. A number of our EMTs are Instructors for Pre-Hospital Pediatric Care, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Intermediate Advanced Life Support, First-Aid and CPR, Technical Rope Rescue, Outdoor Survival and Navigation, Technical Vehicle Rescue and more.
