Job Summary: Surgical Technologist - Sterile Processing
The Certified Surgical Tech (CST) functions as a member of the Surgical Services Perioperative Team. The CST performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery. The CST may perform the duties of Scrub Technologist and/or Second Assisting Technologist in accordance with BMH policies and procedures.

Under the supervision of the Surgical Services Lead and at the direction of Registered Nurses, performs scrubbing and assisting duties within and support of the sterile field during operative procedures and assures proper care and maintenance of all surgical instrumentation and equipment. Demonstrates good knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic technique. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment, instruments, armamentarium, procedures and supplies used in the operating room. Able to work under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact, stamina and endurance.

Assist the surgical team before, during and after surgery. Ensures operating suites are adequately prepared for procedures. Responsible to sort, disassemble, clean, assemble, and sterilize instrumentation, scopes and supplies. Stocks procedure trays, instrument sets and supplies. Completes duties according to prescribed Central Processing procedures, AAMI standards, and infection control guidelines. Completes all requests for case carts, procedure trays, instrumentation, scopes, and supplies. Initiates, supports and enforces work efforts that maximize quality, safety and service while providing optimum customer service to all hospital departments surgical instrumentation. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

Establish & maintain solid work relationships through communication, cooperation and positive interaction with all employees, staff, patients and physicians.

REPORTS TO: Nurse Manager and/or Surgical Services Lead

REQUIRED: NBSTSA, Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year of related work experience. Current BLS certification.
Central processing technician require knowledge of cleaning, preparation, sterilization, storage, and use of items from the operating room services and other departments within the hospital. Also, the ordering, stocking, and charging of patient charge items for O.R. procedures.

Working knowledge of electronic records and electronic healthcare systems; working experience in a hospital or healthcare environment.
Current Sterile Processing and/or Endoscopy Technician

Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages preferred.
