Health Information Management Coder (Certified) is responsible for classifying medical data from inpatient and outpatient records which includes review of documentation and assignment of numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure using the ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding systems. HIM Coder ensures compliance with established coding systems, third party reimbursement policies, regulations and coding guidelines. Responsibilities include collaboration with revenue cycle (billing and collections) to optimize accurate database information, coding proficiencies and reimbursement. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

Establish & maintain solid working relationships with communication, cooperation, and positive interactive with all employees, staff, patients and physicians.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages preferred.

SUPERVISED BY:
Reports to the Health Information Management Director

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Required: High school diploma or G.E.D. Equivalent

Preferred:
Completion of CAHIIM Accredited HIM Program, Medical Coding Program, Medical Terminology Courses, Anatomy and Physiology Courses
Working experience in hospital or clinic setting with THREE (3) to FIVE (5) years of experience in the HIM, coding, medical records and/or a combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of general math skills and concepts.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT),
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS),
- Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P), or
- Certified Coding Associate (CCA)

Certification in CCS within 3 years of hire in this position and/or working towards RHIT within 4 years of hire in this position.
